Why preparation matters
Structural engineering runs on information: what the structure is, what it carries, and what's being asked of it. The better the starting information, the less time the engineer spends reconstructing basics — and the more of the fee goes toward actual engineering judgment.
You don't need a complete package to start a conversation. But knowing what will eventually be needed lets you gather it in parallel instead of in sequence.
Documents that help on almost every project
- The project address and a short description of what you're planning
- Current architectural drawings, even preliminary ones
- Any existing structural drawings, especially for renovation work
- Geotechnical (soils) reports, where they exist
- Photos of relevant existing conditions — wide shots and close-ups
- Prior inspection or engineering reports
- Your approximate design and construction schedule
For work on existing buildings
Original construction drawings are the single most valuable document for existing-building work. Check with the building department, previous owners, the original architect, or your facility archives — even partial sets help.
Where drawings don't exist, expect the engagement to include field measurement and, in some cases, exploratory openings. Knowing that up front makes the scope and schedule realistic.
For equipment and industrial projects
- Vendor general-arrangement drawings and load data
- Anchor bolt layouts and manufacturer anchorage requirements
- Operating constraints: shutdown windows, access routes, crane availability
- Plant design standards, where they exist
What not to worry about
You don't need to diagnose the problem, choose the structural system, or know the code sections involved — that's the engineer's job. A plain-language description of what you want to build, change, or understand is the right starting point.
